In chapter 29, the two real Wilk's brothers arrive yet the king and duke still claim to be the real brothers. Huck easily escapes when the mob of people decide to dig up the grave of Peter Wilk's in order to check for a tattoo. Instead the group found the $6000 hidden by Huck in the coffin. During the excitement, Huck quickly escapes back to the raft with Jim and becomes dissapointed in his escape due to the king and duke catching up. The king and the duke begin to argue and fight over who hid the money. Soon the king and duke once again became on good terms with one another and devised a plan behind Jim and Huck's back. When they reached shore, Jim was quickly set up and sold by the king. In search of Jim, Huck arrives at the Phelp's farm. Realizing he had been mistaken for being Tom Sawyer, he went along with the idea and pretended to be him. He later met Tom on his way to the Phelp's and claimed him to be his brother Sid. The two boys remained at the farm and lived there. They soon found out that Jim was being kept at the Phelp's and came up with a plan to set him free. Always up for an adventure, Tom made the plan of escape difficult so as to provide the effects of a real mysterious adventure. This plan took many days and caused large amounts of confusion throughout the town and the Phelps family. Finally Jim was set free by Tom and Huck, and all three escaped down the river. While running from the men, Tom got shot in the leg by the crew of farmers and became ill after the get away. Due to this, Huck was forced to go into town and fetch a doctor. The doctor refused to go across the river with Huck in the canoe due to its condition, so Huck returned to town the next morning to act as if he was in search of the doctor. While in town, he ran into Uncle Silas and was forced to return to the farm. Aunt Sally waited for "Sid's" arrival all night. The next morning Tom and Jim were brought back to the farm by the doctor and a group of boatsmen. After Tom woke up from his sleep, he declared Jim a free man and wasn't taken seriously until the arrival of Aunt Polly who confirmed. After being freed, Jim was awarded $40 by the two boys for putting up with their antics. (Taryn)

Huck finally meets up with Tom Sawyer. At first, Tom is amazed that he is seeing a “ghost” (aka Huck), but he soon realizes that Huck is alive. Huck updates Tom on the whole situation and Tom agrees to help Huck set Jim free. When Tom said this, it sort of surprised Huck. When they have dinner at the Phelps’ house Tom says that his name is William Thompson. Later on after dinner, Huck and Tom sneak out of the house. As they are walking towards where they think Jim is, they see the duke and the daulphin tarred and feathers up. (This is the last time that we hear about the duke and the daulphin.) Once they figure out where Jim is, they try to concoct a plan on how they are going to free him. When Huck proposes his idea Tom says that is shows no showmanship. So, Tom comes up with this unnecessary plan to free Jim. At first, they start digging Jim out with spoons but thankfully they drop this idea. Aunt Sally begins to notice some items missing from her house but she doesn’t know that Huck and Tom were the ones that had stolen some items from her house. Aunt Sally eventually blames the rats for stealing her stuff. Tom loves to create adventures as “complicated as possible.” Jim finally confronts Tom for all the outrageous things that he is making them do. Tom then writes letters to Silas Phelps about someone who was planning on stealing Jim. Later that night, the Phelp’s house is attacked by a mob. Thankfully, Jim, Tom, and Huck escape through a hole they had cut in the wall. While they were running away from the mob, Tom gets shot in the leg. You would think that he would be very sad and in pain, however, Tom wears this bullet like a necklace. Even though Tom is happy with this shot, Huck gets a doctor to come visit Tom. People find out that Jim took very good care of Tom. So they unchain Jim and treat him nicely. Tom gives Jim $40 dollars because he put up with him and Huck. Jim said that his theory of becoming rich again with a hairy chest was true after all! Towards the end of the book, Jim tells Huck that his dad was the dead man he saw in the river. Huck doesn’t portray ANY emotion to what Jim says…. Huck says that he is very glad that he doesn’t have to write about anything else because writing a book was hard work. (Laura)

CH 29-CH the Last
The king and the duke are still pretending to be Wilks's brothers when the real Wilks brothers show up. They go through a lot of testing and doubters to prove they are what they said they were to get the inheritance. It escalades to where they are almost caught but what would have been an angry mob got distracted by the money they found in Peter Wilks's grave. The king and duke (and Huck) take the chance to run back to the boat. Jim and Huck, after listening to the king and duke argue over not getting the inheritance, decide they are sick of the royalty. So, they devise a plan to escape as soon as possible. Huck also faces a moral dilemma when he realizes he's breaking the law by helping free Jim. But, he decides he would rather go to hell than to see Jim enslaved. However, the king sold Jim and kept all the money for himself. Huck decided to visit the Phelps's farm. He gets there and is mistaken for Tom Sawyer, who is supposed to be visiting his aunt and uncle Phelps. Huck ran into Tom, who was on his way to the Phelps farm, and told him what was happening. Tom came up with a scheme, and led his aunt and uncle to believe he was Sid Sawyer. Tom decided he wanted to help Huck steal Jim back, who they discover is with the Phelps. So, Tom comes up with a very convoluted and romanticized plan of stealing Jim back, which takes them a few weeks(and a few chapters) and also causes Aunt Sally much grief. Their antics of stealing sheets, spoons, candles, candlesticks, butter, and who knows what else keep her counting and recounting until she finally gives up on the inventory. They also toy with the mind of another slave, who brings Jim his food. They confirm his belief in witches and use him to give things to Jim. Tom's plan even goes as far as putting bugs and snakes in with Jim to make him a "proper prisoner". They also wrote a letter to warn the Phelps of robbers coming to steal Jim which leads to the Phelps rounding up all their friends and neighbors to help catch them. Huck and Tom finally try to steal Jim, but Tom is shot in the leg by one of the robber protection crew. Huck had to fetch a doctor and one thing led to another and Jim got recaptured. However, Tom sets straight that Jim was free, and had been for weeks. Miss Watson, his owner, had died and set him free in her will. Tom's mother showed up to explain which boy was which. Huck found out from Jim that he still had money, and that his father was dead. In fact, his father had been the dead man in the floating house. Aunt Sally said she would adopt Huck, but he wasn't very thrilled about being made civilized by anyone.

The way you summarize makes understanding the book so much easier. Thanks and way to go! (Stuart)

CH 29- Ch the Last

They go down to the graveyard, and find the $6000 dollars in Peter Wilks' coffin. The whole gang goes crazy about the money! The DUke and Dauphin then blame each other for placing it there. So, now Jim and Huck are traveling back down the river. They make a plan to escape the first chance they get. They end up having a little problem with that when Jim gets captured. Huck wrote a letter and was thinking about sending it to Miss.Watson and telling her that he knows where Jim is but he doesn't. He decides that he'll go to hell in order to save Jim. Because now they are friends and they care about each other and love each other. Huck starts for the Phelps house. Tom is in disbelief when he sees that Huck is alive and not murdered back in St.Pertersburg. Tom and Huck escape one night to go see the Royal Nonesuch once again. But this time they are only going to find the Duke and the Dauphin being carried down the road by a very angry mob! When these two boys are together nothing stops them. They think of another plan. This plan is to help Jim escape out of custody. Tom comes up with an extremely dangerous plan, but they decide to go with it. Tom decides that the obstacles for getting Jim out will have to be created by themselves. They start digging with knives, but then they find an ax. Jim's superstitions are still really stupid. The guys steel a shirt, candle, and a sheet which they stuff in pie form to give to Jim so he can use that stuff to escape with. Jim finally gets fed up with Toms complicated plan. Then Huck and Tom get snakes and rats and let them loose in the house. Tom writes an anonymous letter and attaches frightful images to it, to try to trick the Phelps's in to staying in their home. Tom says he's and Indian. Tom gets shot in the calf and Jim insists on seeing a doctor. The doctor almost comes, but doesn't come on the canoe because he didn't think it could hold him up. The doctor leaves and Huck has to go home. But everybody is wondering where Tom ran off to... Tom and Hucks entire plan is discovered by Aunt Polly. Aunt Sally said that once they are well they are going to get a good beating! And we also find out that according Miss.Watson's will Jim is finally a free slave. Then, finally, the last chapter answers everything that we have been wondering! And Jim gets treated especially nicely!! (Haley)

Ch 29-Ch the Last
The king and the duke continue to impersonate the Wilks's brothers when the real Wilks brothers show up. The real brother then claims there is a tattoo on Peter Wilks and when they open the coffin to check, they find the $6000 that Huck hid. Huck escapes and runs back to the raft, but is dissappointed when the king and the duke catch up in a boat. They want to leave the con artists so they devise a plan to escape as soon as possible. During this time, Huck realizes he's breaking the law by helping free Jim. After trying to write a letter to Mrs. Watson, he remembers all the times with Jim and he decides he would rather go to hell than to see Jim enslaved. However, Huck finds out that the king sold Jim and kept all the money for himself. Huck also finds out that Jim is at the Phelps Farm. When he arrives, he is mistaken for Tom Sawyer because the Phelps were his aunt and uncle Later, Huck ran into Tom and told him what was happening. Tom came up with a scheme, and convinced his aunt and uncle that he was Sid Sawyer, Tom's brother. Tom decided he wanted to help Huck steal Jim back and he creates a complex and unnecessary plan to steal Jim back. The foolish plan causes them to trick another slave and eventually they warn the Phelps of their plan for an extra challenge. Huck and Tom finally try to steal Jim, but Tom is shot in the leg by one of the guards. Huck tries to find a doctor and separate from Tom and Jim. Eventually, Jim gets recaptured and Tom is found wounded. After he is healing, Tom reveals that Jim was free already because Miss Watson had died and set him free in her will. Huck also found out that his father was dead. When Jim hid the man's face in the floating house, he was trying to protect Huck because it was Pap. Aunt Sally said she would adopt Huck, but he doesnt want to. (Tony)

Chapter 29

Well the real Harvey Wilks shows up with his deaf brother William. They want their inheritance and can prove themselves if that's what it takes. A lawyer helps them to settle the dispute. It all boils down to a signature and what kind of tattoo. When they go to the graveyard, the whole gang mannages to escape as the population finds the 6000 dollars and becomes infatuated with it.
Chapter 30
The duke and dauphin then blame each other for placing it there.
Chapter 31
As they travel on down the river, jim and huck make plans to escape the first chance they get. But jim gets captured. Huck decides he'll go to hell in order to save him.
Chapter 32
Huck decides to head to the phelps house instead of where the duke directed him to. i wonder if we'll hear from the duke ever again? he was the only shred of normalcy and educated-ness the story had. :( Besides, Huck arrives at the Phelps where Tom was being expected. the two make a plan to trick this family, and who would have guessed but it worked to perfection!

Chapter 33
Tom is startled by the fact that huck is alive and not dead back in St. Petersburg. Next tom kisses mrs phelps and says he is sid, his brother in real life. Tom and Huck escape one night to go and see the Royal NOnesuch once again only to find the duke and dauphin tar and feathered and being carried down the rooad by an angry mob (like in shrek when theyre headed to kill the ogre. haha)
Chapter 34
The dynamic duo work up another plan, this time to help jim escape fromm captivity (kinda sounds like an animal doesn't it?) Huck decides on a boring one, but Tom comes up with one 15 times as stylish and they decide to use it even though all three technically could die if it fails. Huck decides he will have to dig Jim out.
Chapter 35
Tom decides that all the obstacles to helping Jim escape will have to be created by themselves cause the keeper isnt going to do it.
Chapter 36
The digging starts out with knives, but as this probes to be wayyy too tough pick axes are chosen instead. Jims superstitious keeper proves to be dumber than a door knob.
Chapter 37
The shirt, candles, and sheeet are now being missed. But she gets tricked so bad she doesnt even want to know what happende to them anymore. the guys build a pie full of stuff for jim to use to escape with.
Chapter 38
Jim puts together a pretty humorous coat of arms. Tom continues to try to make things complicated and Jim gets fed up. He doesnt care for rattlesnakes, rats, or a flower fed with tears even though they may lead to greatness as tom mentions
Chapter 39
in this chapter Huck and Tom get snakes and rats and let them loose in the house(i couldnt tell if it was on purpose or not but i dont think so.) Tom writes an anonymous letter and draws frightful images in blood on their doors to try and trick the phelpses into staying in their homes. he Claims to be an indian whose turned the right way.
Chapter 40
tHis was one of the better chapters ive read in a while. 15 angry farmers all armed are waiting downstairs for the indians to arrive. this is a prime example of situational irony. I could just see tom and huck getting shot at and on the run as soon as i read this and of course it did happen. tom gets shot in the calf and jim insists on seeing a doctor. he steps up. it was different.
Chapter 41
The doctor almost comes, but stops at the canoe in fear that it wont hold him up. Huck goes to sleep and wakes up to find out the doctor has ditched. huck then runs into uncle silas and has to go home. Aunt sally especially but also everyone else is wondering where in the world tom has escaped off to?

Chapter 42

Chapter The Last
This chapter is all about answers. When Huck asks Tom what he had planned to do once he had freed the already-freed Jim, Tom replies that he was planning to repay Jim for his troubles and send him back a hero, giving him a reception complete with a marching band. When Aunt Polly and the Phelpses hear about the assistance Jim gave the doctor in nursing Tom, they immediately unchain him, feed him, and treat him like a king. Tom gives Jim forty dollars for his troubles, and Jim declares that the omen of his hairy chest—which was supposed to bring him fortune—has come true.

"But I reckon I got to light out for the territory ahead of the rest, because Aunt Sally
she's going to adopt me and sivilize me, and I can't stand it. I been there before. " (Kyle)

Chapters 29-Chapter the last
The Duke and the Dauphin's world turned upside down when the real Wilks brothers came back to town. Most of the people believed them to be the frauds they are and began to ask them very specific questions only known by the WB. Because of Peter's grave digging, the royal heinesses and Huck saw this as a perfect opportunity to escape. Huck and Jim began by themselves, but to much of Huck's dismay, they were once again joined by the Duke and the Dauphin. Everyone. except for Jim, went along shore and the "royals" started their Royal Nonesuch buisness again. When Huck returned to the canoe, he finds Jim gone and discovered that the Duke turned him in. After running into the Duke in town, he reveals to Huck Jim's whereabouts. (Phelp's Farm). He goes and is treatedlike family....they believe him to be Tom Sawyer. Huck then went back into town to find Tom and tell him the whole situation. TOm was scared because he thought that Huck was a ghost, but then his wild imagination urged him on to this wild adventure. On their way back, they witness the Tar and Feathering of the Duke and the Dauphin, and he began to feel bad. So he was ready to free Jim, and got Tom involved. But of coarse Tom has to do everything the complicated way because he read so in his adventure novels. So after discovering Jim, Tom and Huck go about doing everything the most complicated way for Jim, but really begin to protect him when they feared of the Phelps selling him. So they forged threatning letters, that got the family very much on their toes. With the jail break almost complete, they snuck out Jim, mindful of the farmers, armed, around the corner. Unfortunately they did not do it too quietly and ended up getting Tom shot in the leg. (To his liking of coarse!!). They went to the island and recevied help from a doctor, who later saved Jim by making him out to be a hero. Aunt Polly comes to the Phelp's house and sorts out the mixup and informs everyone that Jim is free. Huck learns that he has to stay and be civilized, he does not appreciate that. (Caroline V)

(Elizabeth)

Chapters 29-32
The real Wilks brothers show up and they want their inheritance. So, the King and the Duke tell the towns people that those are the imposters, so a lawyer comes to help settle the dispute by asking questions only the real brothers would know. The questions that are the key deciders in the dispute are about what kind of tattoo is on the body and their signature. Then, the two men get out of town and catch up with Huck. Each of the men think the other one hid the money, which leads to a big argument. It is soon resolved. All four men keep traveling up the river and Huck and Jim make plans to ditch the King and the Dauphin. When they get the chance to escape, Huck finds out that the Dauphin sold Jim. Then Huck decides to write Miss Watson about Jim’s whereabouts, but then he says “All right then I’ll go to hell! …” and makes plans to steal Jim back out of slavery. When Huck was on his way to see Silas, he runs into the duke and in the conversation, he accidentally tells Huck that Jim is at Phelps’ farm. Huck arrives at Phelps’ farm and is greeted by Silas and Sally Phelps, who think Huck is their nephew Tom Sawyer. Later when Tom arrives Huck explains the situation and the two plan to trick the family.
Chapters 33-36
Tom is heading to the farm and is surprised by Huck, who is believed to be dead. When they arrive at the farm, Huck introduces Tom as William Thompson. One night Huck and Tom sneak out and see a mob of people chasing the King and the Dauphin. Huck at first feels sorry for them, but that feeling quickly goes away. Tom then finds out that Jim is being held in a shed on the farm. Huck comes up with the plan to just steal the key, but Tom comes up with a much craftier one. They go visit Jim and trick his keeper into letting them in, and they talk to Jim and explain how they are going to free him. Tom says they must saw Jim's chain off instead of just lifting it off the bed's framework, because that's how it's done in all the books. Tom rattles off a list of other things that are allegedly necessary in plotting an escape, including a rope ladder, a moat, and a shirt on which Jim can keep a journal, presumably written in his own blood. Sawing Jim's leg off to free him from the chains would also be a nice touch. But since they are pressed for time, they will dig Jim out with case-knives, or large table knives. Despite all the theft that the plan entails, Tom chastises Huck for stealing a watermelon from the slaves' garden and makes Huck give the slaves a dime as compensation. Later that night they are trying to release Jim, they switch from using knives to pick-axes to dig him out.
The next day, they gather candlesticks, spoons, and tin plates. That night, the boys dig their way to Jim, who is delighted to see them. He tells them that Sally and Silas have been to visit and pray with him. Jim does not understand the boys' fancy scheme but agrees to go along. Tom convinces Jim's keeper, Nat, who believes witches are haunting him, that the only cure is to bake a “witch pie” and give it to Jim. Tom plans to bake a rope ladder into the pie.
Chapters 37-40
Aunt Sally notices the missing shirt, candles, sheets, and other articles Huck and Tom steal for their plan, and she takes out her anger at the disappearances on seemingly everyone except the boys. She believes that perhaps rats have stolen some of the items. Jim scratches a coat of arms on the wall of the shed. Tom is disappointed that the wall is made of wood and not of stone. Tom wants Jim to take a rat or a rattlesnake into the shed and tame it. Then he wants Jim to grow a flower only with his tears. In the next chapter, Huck and Tom catch rats and snakes and accidentally let them loose in the Phelps’ house. Tom starts writing anonymous letters to the Phelpses. The last letter is from a gang that is planning on stealing Jim. One night after supper, Huck and Tom get sent straight to bed. Later Huck sees 15 farmers in the house. Huck goes to warn Tom and Jim at the shed. Tom gets excited. Jim, Huck, and Tom escape through a hole in the wall. Tom gets shot in the leg, but surprisingly he is excited about the injury.
Chapters 41-Last
Huck goes out to get a doctor for Tom, but the doctor was afraid the canoe wouldn’t hold him so he doesn’t go. At this time Huck had fallen asleep and wakes up to find out that the doctor didn’t go. Then, Huck ran into Uncle Silas and he went home. When he got home, Aunt Sally wouldn’t let him leave because she didn’t want to lose another boy. Tom is brought to the house semi-conscious and Jim is brought in chains. The doctor explains how Jim risked his life to nurse Tom’s. When Tom wakes up he explains everything to Aunt Sally and how Miss Watson died 2 months ago, so Jim is free. Aunt Polly comes and ruins Huck and Tom’s plan. In the last chapter, Huck asked Tom what he was going to do once he freed Jim. Tom answered saying, he was going to repay him for all his troubles and send him back complete with a marching band. When the Phepses and Aunt Polly hear how Jim assisted the doctor, they immediately unchain him, feed him and treat him like a king. Tom gives Jim $40 and Jim says it is because he has a hairy chest. After Tom fully recovers, he wears his bullet around his neck. Jim also tells Huck that the body in the floating house was Pap. (Kati Causey)

Chapters 29-32
To make matters worse for the King and Duke's heist, the actual Wilks brothers come some to town. Huck makes a run for the river and Jim. Not long after they have set sail, the King and the Duke hitch a ride too. Once the clan gets to a new town, the King and Duke look around the town to see if it is OK to show their faces and possibly start up "The Royal Nonesuch" con again. When Huck reaches the raft he realizes that Jim is missing In town he learns that the King and Duke sold him back into slavery (probably for alcohol money). Huck discovers where Jim has been taken, and makes his way to Phelp's Farm. He is greeted heavily by the family and takes the role of a cousin coming to visit. In the end we learn he has to pretend to be Tom Sawyer.
Chapters 33-36
At Phelp's Farm, Huck realizes that Tom is probably on his way so Huck decides to meet him beforehand. They decide ti keep Huck's identity safe, and Tom pretends to be Sid (I guess his brother or cousin???) News makes its way to Huck that a con show called "The Royal Nonesuch" has come to town and the town plans to tar and feather the producers of it. Huck is struck with guilt and sets out to warn the King and Duke but is too late. A truck rides b with the King and Duke perfectly tarred and feathered. Huck and Tom decide that they are going to free Jim from slavery. Huck opts for an easy escape plan but is turned down by Tom. Tom wants to free Jim the ways that people escape forom prison, with case-knives and 87 years. Once they start to dig for Jim they realize that this romanticized escape probably isn't going to work, so they trade in their knives for picks and shovels.
Chapters 37-40
These chapters are filled with Tom's idea of how breaking out a prisoner should be. They steal spoons from the kitchen, and then, to cover there tracks, they play mind games with Aunt Sally. Also, Tom and Huck put spiders, snakes, and rats in Jim's room (because Tom read that somewhere). The boys also ask Jim if he can grow a flower in his cell. During this time we see Jim being the father-figure by going alond with the kids' outlandish ideas. A few days before the "evasion" Tom writes letters to the Phelp's, so to warn them of Jim's breakout. The chapter ends the night the plan is set, and we are left with the feeling something crazy is going to happen (OF COURSE)!
Chapter 41- chapter the last
The chapters begin with the nameless doctor and Huck trying to get help for Tom, who is wounded from the bullet. Huck is unsure of the doctor's ability to cure Tom so he decided to return back to the Phelps's. He is greeted by a worried aunt and uncle. After aunt sally is given a letter from her sister, Tom is found on a matress with Jim and the doctor by his side. He tells how he and Huck helped Jim escape, but then tries to trick her by playing dumb. The family and farmers are ready to kill Jim, but the doctor comes to the rescue. He tells how Jim gave up his only chance at freedom to save Tom. The family agrees and Jim's life is spared. Later, aunt Polly arrives and straightens out who's who between Tom and Huck. We then discover that Jim has been a free man for several weeks. Ms. Watson felt guilty for almost selling him down river so her dying wish was to give him freedom. Also we learn that the dead man in the floating house was Pap and Huck is $6,000 richer. Huck finishes the book by telling of plans to head out west to avoid being civilized by the Phelps. :)

37-Chapter the Last

Jim turns out to be a good prisoner, doing the things Tom tells him to do with very little backtalk. Tom, wanting it to be an infamous jailbreak, adds millions of details to the plan. Some are: writing dark and mournful poems on a big grindstone, hiding a rope ladder under the bed, digging a tunnel to the jail, almost digging a moat around the jail, filling the jail with snakes and rats and spiders, and even suggesting that Jim's leg gets sawed off. After a long time, the jailbreak is almost complete. Huck and Tom head out to free him and as the defending farmers pile into the jail, Huck, Jim, and Tom run off. Tom gets shot in the leg so Huck heads for help. The doctor comes to the island and tries to help Tom. Huck stays in the nearby town but when he wakes up the next day he runs into Uncle Silas. Making up a story, he is brought back to the house. After a lot of worrying, Tom shows up with Jim, brought back by the doctor. All the neighbors want to hang Jim, trash-talk him, and lock him in the jail again. The doctor defends Jim by telling them how Jim lost his freedom again because he came out to help the doctor save Tom. Tom regains his consciousness and tells who actually freed Jim. Then, Aunt Polly, Tom's mother?, shows up and tells all how Ms. Watson had died and Jim was free. She tells how Huck is not really Tom and Tom is not really Sid and everyone is happy. Chapter 36:
Huck and Tom finally dig so that they can see Jim. They find out that Aunt Sally and Uncle Silas have prayed with him. When they make it to the island where the raft is, they are all excited-- especially Tom because he got shot in the leg. Huck and Jim are worried, and decide that he needs a doctor. This convinces Huck that Jim is "white on the inside."

The next morning, Huck runs right into Uncle Silas, who immediately sends him home. The house is filled with the farmers from the last night and their wives, whom are all chatting about how a gang must have been tricking them all this time. Aunt Polly walks in the room and informs Aunt Sally of who "Tom" and "Sid" really are.
Chapter The Last:
The family immediatly unchains Jim and treats him like part of the family. Tom gives him $40 because of all of the trouble. Tom makes a full recovery. When Huck asks how he knows, Jim tells Huck that the dead man in the floating house was actually his father. Huck is going to be adopted by the Phelps' and they are going to "sivilize" him.
(Caroline Lassiter)

Chapter 29
The real William and Harvey arrive in town and explain their dilemma of loosing their luggage. After Doctor Robinson declares that the duke and dauphin are frauds, the men are tested by signing a piece of paper (which is suggested by a lawyer.) But, because the real Harvey had broken his arm, it could not be confirmed that that was truly Harvey. After two different versions of a tattoo are described, the people are left confused. The lawyer then tells the “mob” that they can examine it for themselves. They take with them the four men and Huck. However, when they discover the $6,000 in the coffin, Huck escapes during the uproar. Huck steals a canoe quickly and meets Jim. He was overjoyed, but not for long. When he turns around, he realizes the duke and dauphin are following him.
Chapter 30
The two men catch up with Huck. The dauphin nearly strangles Huck to death, but the duke holds him back. Both the duke and the dauphin believe that the other hid the money in the coffin with the intent of picking it up later. They get in a huge fight, but end up making up later.
Chapter 31
The four men travel together, trying to get away from all of the rumors of the scam. They try to fool various towns, but nothing seems to work. When the duke and dauphin stop at a tavern and fight for a while, Huck finds the appropriate time to escape. He leaves the two frauds, but then can’t find Jim. A man approaches Huck, handing him a $200 handbill for Jim’s capture. They boys tell Huck that a man caught Jim, and lost interest in the runaway slave, selling him to Silas Phelps (a farmer) for forty dollars. After hearing the description of the man who sold Jim, Huck realizes that it was the dauphin. He decides he wants to do what’s right and write Miss Watson, telling her about the situation. But then he says, “All right then I’ll go to hell! …” and he plans to steal Jim out of slavery. When Huck goes to see Silas Phelps, he meets up with the duke who was putting up posters for the “Royal Nonesuch.” In the midst of their conversation, the duke spills that Jim is at Phelps Farm, and later encourages Huck to take a trip out there.
Chapter 32
Huck goes out to the Phelps farm, greeted by Sally and Silas Phelps, who believe Huck is their nephew Tom. Huck soon realizes that their nephew is his best friend, Tom Sawyer. After making up an excuse for “being late,” Huck heads down to the ducks when he hears a steamboat. He wants to make sure that if the real Tom Sawyer comes, he’s aware of the situation.
Chapter 33
Huck meets up with Tom after seeing his wagon heading down the road. At first, Tom thinks that Huck is a ghost, believing that Huck had been killed at St. Petersburg a while back. When Tom and Huck arrive at the Phelps Farm, Tom is introduced as a guest (William Thompson.) He gets on bad terms with Sally after kissing her hand in the middle of dinner. That night, Huck and Tom sneak out and see a crowd of townspeople chasing the duke and dauphin out of town. Huck feels sorry for them at first, but that feeling quickly goes away.
Chapter 34
Tom figures out where Jim is being held, in a shed on the farm. Huck proposes that they steal the key to the prison door. But, knowing Tom Sawyer, he comes up with a much wilder plan, that both boys agree on. After getting Jim’s keeper to let them see Jim for a while, they tell Jim what they are going to do, and start to plan even further.
Chapter 35
Tom says that in order to get Jim free, they are going to have to saw off his leg chain, but later that changes to just sawing off Jim’s leg. They come up with all sorts of contraptions that they’ll use to free Jim. At the end of the chapter, Tom gets mad at Huck for stealing the slaves’ watermelon, and makes Huck give each one a dime, without telling them why.
Chapter 36
Tom and Huck finally dig up to the point where they can see Jim. They convince Nat (the keeper) that the only way to scare the witches away is to make a cake. He believes it, because Tom says that the witches are probably just hungry. The boys plan to bake a rope ladder into the pie-part of their fancy plan.
Chapter 37
Aunt Sally finally realizes all of the many things that are missing. She seems to blame this on everybody BUT Huck and Tom. They continue to steal and put back the things that they need in order to help Jim escape. And, finally, Sally can’t keep track of it anymore.
Chapter 38
Tom suggests that Jim write his coat of arms on the wall. However, when that plan fails to work, Tom and Huck both agree on sneaking Jim out.
Chapter 39
Tom and Huck plan to capture rats and snacks, and put them in the shed where Jim is. But, they also manage to infest the Phelps’ house in the process. Also, during this chapter, Silas plans to put an ad in the paper stating that Jim is a captured runaway in the main newspapers (one of which might get to Miss Watson.) Then, the boys pretend to be gangsters and write a letter to the Phelps’ warning them of the dangers ahead.
Chapter 40
Huck becomes aware that there are fifteen local farmers with guns on the plantation. He then goes to tell Huck and Jim, who try to escape through a wall in the shed. When they make so much noise, the men come after them. Suddenly, they start to shoot, and the boys run away to the edge of the river to hop in the canoe. Once they’re in the boat, they see how bad Tom’s shot wound is and start to wonder if they should get a doctor.
Chapter 41-Chapter the Last
Huck tells the doctor where to go to find Jim and Tom. Then, Uncle Silas comes along and takes Huck back to the house. They tell him things like if you don't look in the barn at what we do the witches won't bother you.
Chapter 37-40:
This chapter is all about the setting in motion of the plan to escape Jim. Tom has about a million ideas that he wants to use because he has read "the right way" of how to free someone. The boys like to trick Aunt Sally and steal her spoons and knives and candlesticks for the plan. They also put snakes and rats in Jim's barn because Tom had read that somewhere. Tom also asks Jim to make his tears grow a flower and to etch some writing into the barn wall. Jim goes along with everything. Everyone is worried about Tom and he finally is brought to the Plelps' farm with Jim and the doctor. Jim is quickly chained. But Tom tells everyone the true story of how Jim helped the doctor dave him and the truth about Huck and Tom's story- that he was really Tom Saywer and about how they helped Jim escape. Then he tells Huck that Ms. Watson had passed away and gave Jim his freedom in her will and that Pap was the dead man in the floating house. Aunt Sally decides to keep and 'sivilize' Huck so he says I've had enough of that! And plans to run off to 'Indian Territory' (which is really Oklahoma) and end the book because there is nothing more to write about and frankly it has tired him to write this book so he plans to never write another.
